John David Washington and Adam Driver star in this TRUE STORY, about the first black police officer in Colorado Springs, Colorado who ends up joining the KKK. Yeah, you read that right. It is a fucking wild story.
John David Washington places a rookie detective in still, a very divided nation racially, where the north is doing its best to segregate but the N word is still prevalent even in the north. Black Panthers are looked at as a threat. The department asks Washington to go undercover and “check the tone” of a local Black Panther party. He proves to be very good at undercover work.
His next task? Join the local chapter of the KKK as there are rumors of some vicious attacks planned in the city. How do you do that? Well, you come up with a fake name, lots of phone calls in a white voice and in person meet ups, you send Adam Driver. Both are Ron Stallworth. Newest member of the KKK. The objective is to get as far into the Klan as possible and foil any plan for dangerous attacks. Ron Stallworth works his way all the way up to meeting and speaking and eating with David Duke, head of the KKK, who is played somewhat very believably by Topher Grace haha. You willl have to see for yourself.
It is a remarkable story, very engaging all throughout, super interesting, it has funny moments and honestly no real sad moments in the movie. It is more of a comedy if anything. But you get to the very end and the thought provocation and the feels come. I thought they did a masterful job of it. Although this detective was doing great work and a star and working with a partner who was not a racist, at the end of the day, he was still black. He was still less then. And you see it at the end of the movie. Briefly. But its after the last scene, which is HILARIOUS, that they show clips from Charlottesville that really say to you as the viewer, hey, this was 50 years ago, and THIS SHIT IS STILL FUCKING GOING ON. And THAT is what hits you in the feel bone and sends ya into some just tough thinking. And you realize black people are still dealing with this same bullshit. It got the point across very matter of fact without hitting you over the head with it all movie and taking away from the incredible story.
I thought this was an EXCELLENT FUCKING FILM, anyone who knows my movie style by now should know this based on the description. That is a review.
