Peak Denzel Washington. The interesting thing to me about Denzel is this. Does he KINDA play the EXACT same person in every single movie. YES. He does. A swaggering, confident, alpha male who is the smartest man in the room. Walks the walk and talks the talk. Does he have MUCH depth to his acting. I would say no. For that reason. He has incredible lines I can rattle off for days but again, its ALWAYS Denzel being the man. Which let me clarify, I fucking love Denzel being the man. I have watched every movie with him.
Ok so to the movie. Swaggering Denzel, at his peak, true story, high school football coach, brought in during segregation 60s to a white school being integrated as a black coach. It is a remarkable story. And he crushes the role. No one was more perfect for it. It is my favorite sports movie ever I think all considered.
The music is incredible, the story is incredible, the acting is great, the football scenes are absolute dog shit and you have to get past a lot of really stupid looking football scenes but it is inspiring, it is fun, it is thought provoking and it makes you feel. Which for a fucking high school football movie, that’s pretty god damn impressive. This is an EXCELLENT FUCKING MOVIE. Maybe the best sports movie ever? I dunno. But that is a review!
Side note: I will not dock the movie for this but, the final scene. Denzels team is DOWN points. AND ON DEFENSE. There is 10 seconds left. You just kneel the ball. BUT the team WITH THE LEAD, runs a play! And a fumble is forced, and the Titans recover the fumble and go 98 yards for a walk off touchdown. It is the most ridiculously stupid and unrealistic play ever. And just so hilarious if you think about it. BUT DO NOT. DO NOT think about. Just go with it.
