Ok I will be honest. This movie probably stinks. That’s the truth. TELL THE TRUTH! (shout out Will Smith in Concussion). I rounded it up into the 6’s. FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER DONE IT. And I did it for two reasons. 1. It was the last film Philip Seymour Hoffman ever made before he died 2. It feels wrong to label any movie that he does as stinks. I couldn’t bring myself to do it.
Look this cast in great. Robin Hall, Rachel McAdams, PSH, William Dafoe. The plot is right in my wheelhouse. A asylum seeking muslim arrives in Germany. But he might not be so innocent. In fact, he absolutely isn’t. And PSH and company know it. He is up to no good. And there is MUCH more to his story than seeking asylum. All of that screams MATT MOVIE. It just … it just didn’t do it. It was slow. It felt lazy. I have seen that movie so many times that maybe I’m tapped out of that “script”. Could be a problem when you watch so many movies. I lost interest in it and fought throughout to stay focused. BUT. I will label it BARELY.. BARELY a SOLID FILM because I do believe both PSH and McAdams acted their asses off in this movie. So there. My first fudge but have to. RIP PSH. That is a review.
